Cuba Accuses US of Creating Pretext for Military Action

(MENAFN) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla has accused the United States of attempting to build justification for possible military intervention against Cuba following reports alleging Havana had obtained attack drones from Russia and Iran.

The accusation came after reports claimed Cuba had expanded its drone capabilities in recent years. Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump also suggested that Cuba could become Washington’s next focus after tensions involving Iran.

Rodriguez Parrilla rejected the allegations, calling the claims part of a “fraudulent case to justify the ruthless economic war against the Cuban people and, eventually, military aggression.” He also stressed that Cuba “neither threatens nor desires war.”

The foreign minister further accused certain media organizations of assisting the campaign, saying, “Certain media outlets are playing along, spreading slanderous claims and publishing insinuations leaked by the US government.”

Relations between Washington and Havana have continued deteriorating in recent months. In February, the US imposed an oil embargo on Cuba, contributing to fuel shortages and recurring blackouts across the island, while American officials have repeatedly issued warnings involving possible military measures.

According to reports published Sunday, US intelligence assessments alleged that Cuba had obtained more than 300 drones since 2023 and had discussed possible operations targeting the American naval base at Guantanamo Bay, US warships, and Key West Air Force Base in Florida.

One senior American official reportedly described Cuba’s possible drone capabilities as “a growing threat.” However, the same reports noted that US authorities do not currently view Cuba as an immediate danger and do not believe Havana is actively preparing an attack.

Russia, which has maintained long-standing political and military ties with Cuba since the Soviet era, did not confirm supplying drones to the island. Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly criticized the American blockade on Cuba, while the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Moscow is ready to provide Havana with “political, diplomatic, and material support.”
